Solution for phones memory card not detected in ubuntu
For long time I was bit confused and worried about why my ubuntu 12.04 is not able to detect my android based phones memory card.Initially, I found out that may be I have to mount the sd card manually but after googling for few hours I found out that mounting sd card was not the solution because using fdisk -l command had not given any output regarding sd card.

Finally, the problem was not of the mounting of the sd card but of the usb connection mode of android.
1.Go to the settings

2.Choose the Xperia option.Inside Xperia there would be 2 options. If your phone is connected to the laptop through USB or if your phone is in USB Tethering mode, then USB connection mode will be disabled.

3.Deselect the USB tethering mode and unplug your USB cable from your laptop/desktop.

If you have already deselected your USB tethering and have not unplugged your usb cable you will not be able to select the USB Connection Mode.It is necessary to unplug your usb cable from either end.

4.Only after unplugging your USB Cable you will able to select the USB Connection Mode.

5.After selecting USB Connection Mode, you will be able to see the two modes.
a) Media Transfer Mode(MTP)
b)Mass Storage Mode(MSC)

6.Select the Mass Storage Mode(MSC) and select OK.

7.Plug your USB Cable and now you can use your Phones memory card in Ubuntu.

Please check whether the usb connection mode is in "media transfer mode" or in "mass storage mode".Following are the steps of how to change the usb connection mode from "media transfer mode" to "mass storage mode".I am taking an example of sony xperia android 4.x
